BERWYN, PA — Congratulations to the Upper Main Line YMCA (UMLY) Swim Team on winning the 2019 Pennsylvania YMCA East District Championship held at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, NJ on March 9 and 10.
In addition to winning the Girls Title, Boys Title and Combined Title, UMLY hosted the event which featured just under 1000 participants over the two days. “Many people have no idea that UMLY not only qualifies large numbers of competitors for this event, we also host it,” says Helen Flanders, Senior Executive Director of UMLY. “And by ‘we’ I mean the wonderful parents that give their time and talents to this huge endeavor.”
UMLY had 133 of their 270-member swim team qualify for the event. The team won the 11/12 Girls, the 13/14 Girls and the 15 and over Girls age groups, as well as the 13/14 Boys and 15 and over Boys age groups. With a solid team effort, they won eight of the 16 relay races.
“I am very proud of our swimmers,” says Louis Petto, Head Coach, UMLY Swim Team. “They had a lot of success performance-wise, but we also hosted the event, so they put a lot of work in and with all the family involvement, it really made for an overall great event.”
UMLY has 59 swimmers moving on to the YMCA State Championships at Penn State University on March 22-24 and currently have 24 swimmers who qualified for the YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, NC on April 1-5.
