WASHINGTON, D.C. — On September 7, 2024, the National Mall will host the inaugural One Lacrosse Gathering Celebration. This event, organized by the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, the National Fitness Foundation, the National Park Service, and Councilmember Ben Jacobs, aims to honor America’s cultural heritage through traditional Native American games. It will emphasize the historical and modern significance of lacrosse, celebrating its impact on cultural identity and health.
The gathering marks the second anniversary of the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, underlining the role of physical activity in promoting wellness. This initiative aligns with President Biden’s strategy to eradicate hunger and improve health by 2030, reducing diet-related diseases.
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities face significant health challenges. Traditional practices, however, have demonstrated their potential to improve health outcomes. The event seeks to promote resilience and strengthen community ties through cultural traditions, benefitting both physical and mental health.
Admiral Rachel Levine emphasizes, “Improving our nation’s health and well-being requires addressing the holistic needs of communities honoring traditional understandings and practices.” She envisions a future where communities thrive through a comprehensive approach to health.
Set against the iconic backdrop of the National Mall, the event will explore the core values of lacrosse: respect, strength, endurance, teamwork, and inclusivity. Led by Ben Jacobs (Osage), the event will showcase the rich tapestry of Native traditions, focusing on modern Indigenous perspectives and promoting cultural inclusion.
“Our goal is to highlight the lasting importance of Native traditions, focusing on modern Indigenous perspectives while sharing culture, identity, and inclusion for all through sport and health,” Jacobs stated. The celebration will bridge local youth lacrosse groups with national organizations, fostering inclusivity and diversity.
Rayhaan Merani, Director of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, adds, “The One Lacrosse Gathering Celebration exemplifies the President’s Council’s commitment to uplifting diverse cultures through sport and tradition.” This event, part of the administration’s efforts to build a healthier America, reflects a dedication to preserving Native heritage while advancing holistic health.
The celebration will feature participants from various sectors, including federal leaders and Tribal communities. The Howard Women’s Lacrosse team will conduct clinics to teach and inspire young attendees. Activities will include youth clinics, skill-building sessions, and demonstrations of traditional games, offering a deep dive into Native culture.
The event will also highlight health and nutrition education, showcasing Indigenous meal ingredients and promoting healthy lifestyles. Participants will gain insights into AI/AN cultural identity and the importance of traditional games in fostering community well-being.
