Former Cecil College Star Khalid Gates Signs with KK Marsonia in Croatia

NORTH EAST, MD — Khalid Gates, a standout former player for Cecil College men’s basketball, is taking his talents to Europe. Gates has signed a contract to play professionally with KK Marsonia, a team in Croatia’s First Men’s Basketball League. The franchise, based in Slavonski Brod, competes in the nation’s premier basketball league.

Gates, a six-foot-five forward, played pivotal roles during his two seasons with the Seahawks. In the 2021-22 season, he led the team with an average of 15.6 points per game. His scoring and defensive prowess earned him a spot on the All-Region 20 First Team. Gates also showcased his skills nationally by being named a First Team All-American for NJCAA Division II men’s basketball.

“I am excited for Khalid as he has worked very hard to get where he is,” said Cecil College Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ed Durham. “I am extremely proud to have witnessed his growth during his time here and to see the continued growth. The Cecil staff are happy for him, and I am sure his family is super proud.”

Gates’ journey with the Seahawks is marked by significant achievements. He was instrumental in leading Cecil College to the NJCAA National Tournament twice, including a third-place finish in the 2018-2019 season. The team finished the 2021-2022 season with an impressive 27-4 record, clinching the Region 20 championship before competing in the national tournament.

In addition to his scoring, Gates averaged 7.8 rebounds per game. He was one of 24 athletes selected to compete at the 2022 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches All-Star Game in Las Vegas, highlighting his status among the elite in junior college basketball.

Gates’ career totals with Cecil College stand at 671 points, with 452 of those coming from his stellar 2021-2022 season. The pandemic canceled the 2020-2021 season, but Gates made the most of his opportunities when he returned to the court.
