EXTON, PA — As inflation and the rising cost of living continue to strain the budgets of individuals and families in Chester County, United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers a welcome relief. In partnership with Life Transforming Ministries (LTM), United Way is providing free tax preparation services to working residents who earn low wages.

Christopher Saello, President and CEO of United Way of Chester County, spoke about the importance of this initiative during challenging economic times. “The VITA program is not just about preparing tax returns; it’s a lifeline for families, empowering them to navigate financial challenges and secure a stable future,” he said.

The program, supported by a grant from the United States IRS and funding from United Way’s Community Impact & Innovation Fund, seeks to offer financial assistance to those most in need. Last year, the VITA program served nearly 6,000 individuals in Chester County, generating an economic impact of over $5 million.

Residents can access the service at various drop-off locations across Chester County, including Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Kennett Square, Parkesburg, Phoenixville, Pottstown, Royersford, and West Chester. A virtual service option is also available through a secure portal.

The program ensures taxpayers can claim all eligible tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).

Executive Director of Life Transforming Ministries, Bill Shaw, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort. “Tax season can be confusing, stressful, and costly. We’re blessed to see so many volunteers and organizations changing that story by partnering together to serve their hard-working neighbors across a growing number of communities,” he said.

To have their taxes prepared at a VITA site, individuals need to bring essential documents, such as a picture ID, all income forms, social security cards, education and health insurance forms, information for deductions/credits, and a copy of last year’s return if available.

United Way of Chester County is committed to ensuring that its community can easily and accurately file their taxes to receive the refunds and credits they deserve.
