Upcoming CCTV Upgrades on Key Highways to Disrupt Traffic in Philadelphia and Chester Counties

Traffic Restrictions

SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — Motorists in Philadelphia and Chester counties should prepare for a series of travel restrictions that are expected to cause delays and backups over the next two weeks. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an ambitious project to upgrade closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras along several major roadways, including Interstate 76, U.S. 30, and Route 100 (Pottstown Pike).

From Tuesday, April 2, through Friday, April 12, drivers will encounter weekday travel restrictions from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at multiple locations. These include eastbound I-76 between the University Avenue and Route 291 interchanges in Philadelphia, and various sections of westbound U.S. 30 and both northbound and southbound Route 100 in Chester County.

The targeted roads are vital arteries for commuters and commercial traffic alike, meaning the scheduled work is likely to have a significant impact on daily travel. The upgrades, part of PennDOT’s efforts to enhance traffic monitoring and management capabilities, are essential for improving roadway safety and efficiency. However, they come with the short-term inconvenience of lane closures and the potential for significant traffic disruptions.

Specifically, the restrictions will affect westbound U.S. 30 between the Route 113 overpass and Route 100 interchange, and several stretches of Route 100 in both directions in West Whiteland and West Goshen townships. Given the timing of the work, during daytime hours when traffic volumes are typically high, PennDOT advises motorists to plan for extra travel time and to anticipate delays.

The project aims to leverage technology for better traffic oversight, but it also highlights the challenges of maintaining and upgrading infrastructure without impacting the flow of traffic. As with all outdoor construction and maintenance activities, the schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions.
