Route 29 Lane Closures Announced for Sinkhole Remediation Project

Traffic Alert

EAST WHITELAND TWP, PA — Significant traffic changes are set to begin on Friday, March 21, as Route 29 (Morehall Road) will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Old Morehall Road and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange. This adjustment, scheduled to last through late June, is part of PennDOT’s ongoing sinkhole remediation efforts in Chester County.

The lane reduction will reroute northbound traffic to the left southbound lane, narrowing the southbound direction to a single lane. To improve traffic flow through the construction zone, a temporary signal will be installed. Motorists traveling in the area are urged to allow extra travel time as delays and congestion are expected. All work is weather dependent.

The $22.4 million project focuses on addressing recurring sinkholes along Route 29 and U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) to ensure long-term stability and minimize future disruptions. Remediation work on U.S. 202 in Montgomery County has already necessitated a 24/7 closure of the northbound lanes between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard, which will remain in effect until early June.

The remediation involves an advanced grouting system, where holes are drilled in a grid pattern and pressurized grout is injected to stabilize the subsurface voids beneath the roadway. This process, combined with drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction, is designed to support the long-term integrity of the roads.

Heidelberg Materials, LLC, is overseeing the federally funded project. The initiative provides a permanent solution to infrastructure vulnerabilities that have caused significant travel disruptions in recent years. Motorists in affected regions are advised to stay informed about upcoming construction milestones.
