PennDOT Unveils $2.9 Million Road Project: What Lies Ahead for Chester County?

traffic alert expect delays

CHESTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled plans for a substantial road improvement project in Chester County. Starting Monday, September 9, PennDOT will initiate a $2.9 million construction effort aimed at enhancing traffic flow and reducing accidents at the intersection of U.S. 202 (Wilmington Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) in Thornbury and Westtown townships.

The project includes the addition of a new southbound right-turn deceleration lane on U.S. 202 at the intersection with Route 926. Moreover, Route 926 will receive an additional eastbound left-turn lane, creating a double left-turn configuration to improve the eastbound approach to U.S. 202. These updates are designed to streamline traffic and lessen congestion in this critical area.

Safety enhancements will also feature signal upgrades and the installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps. Additionally, the project will include milling and paving operations to ensure smoother road surfaces.

Construction is set to begin with lane closures from Monday, September 9, through Friday, September 13, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The closures will affect southbound U.S. 202 between Old Wilmington Pike and Route 926, as well as Route 926 between U.S. 202 and Caleb Drive. Motorists are advised to plan for additional travel time due to expected delays and backups. All construction schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

In recognition of local heritage, the project will involve special provisions to monitor construction impacts on The Westtown Inn. This historic site, located in the northwest quadrant of the intersection, was deemed eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in September 2015.
