EAST WHITELAND TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is progressing on a $22.4 million project to address long-standing sinkhole issues along U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, and Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County. The initiative aims to enhance roadway stability and ensure long-term public safety on these critical corridors.
Through June, northbound U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard will remain closed 24/7. During this closure, motorists are being directed to a detour via Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard. Upon completion of the northbound section, work will shift to a 24/7 closure of the southbound side, with similar detour instructions in place.
Work is also active on Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange. Lane closures and shifts on this stretch are scheduled to continue through late February as crews proceed with median removal and remediation efforts.
PennDOT’s contractor is employing a specialized limited mobility grouting technique to stabilize the ground beneath the pavement. This process involves systematic drilling and the injection of pressurized grout to fill underground voids, effectively minimizing the risk of future sinkholes. Additional improvements include drainage upgrades and full pavement reconstruction.
These remediation measures are essential, as recurrent sinkholes and emergency repairs have disrupted travel and posed safety hazards along both U.S. 202 and Route 29 in recent years. The project underscores PennDOT’s commitment to maintaining a reliable and efficient transportation network.
While the closures are expected to cause temporary inconveniences for motorists, the long-term benefits of greater roadway stability and safety outweigh the short-term challenges. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time in the affected areas.
