Massive Sinkhole Fix on U.S. 202 and Route 29 Aims to Save Lives and Prevent Disaster—Here’s What You Need to Know!

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)

EAST WHITELAND TWP, PA — Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, January 13, on a $22.4 million sinkhole remediation project along U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, and Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County. The project aims to enhance roadway stability and ensure long-term safety for the public.

To address subsurface voids that contribute to sinkhole formation, PennDOT’s contractor will employ a limited mobility grouting technique. This process involves drilling a grid pattern of holes in the pavement and injecting pressurized grout to stabilize the ground beneath the road. Additional work will include drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.

Construction will require intermittent lane closures and traffic shifts at both locations over the coming weeks. On U.S. 202, a right lane closure will be in place between Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard and Ivy Lane from Monday, January 13, through Friday, January 31, during weekday hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, on Route 29, weekday lane closures and traffic shifts will occur in both directions between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange from January 13 through late February for median removal and sinkhole remediation.

Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time when navigating these areas, as delays are expected. All scheduled activities are weather-dependent and subject to change.
