CHESTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated a $10.4 million construction project aimed at widening and enhancing a 1.3-mile section of U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) in Kennett and East Marlborough townships. The effort spans from the Kennett Oxford Bypass to Greenwood Road and is designed to improve traffic flow, pedestrian access, and overall roadway safety.
Construction activities, including roadway and utility work, will take place weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through early November. Lane closures will be implemented in both directions during this period. PennDOT advises motorists traveling through the area to account for potential delays and backups, with all work subject to weather conditions.
Key components of the project include milling and overlaying U.S. 1, constructing a third travel lane in both directions on targeted stretches, and utilizing existing shoulders and right turn lanes to extend the corridor’s capacity. Additional upgrades include the installation of sidewalks along the north side of the roadway between Schoolhouse Road and the Longwood Village Shopping Center, the elimination of left turns from Orchard Avenue onto U.S. 1, and the installation of two Dynamic Message Signs. Five signalized intersections will also undergo significant upgrades as part of the project.
The work is being managed by Allan Myers, LP, a Montgomery County-based contractor. The project is fully funded by federal resources and stands as a testament to ongoing efforts to modernize Chester County’s transportation infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity.
Motorists are encouraged to remain vigilant and plan accordingly while traveling through the construction zone to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
