LONDONDERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that construction will commence on Monday, January 22, 2024, for a highly anticipated roundabout project at the intersection of Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) in Londonderry Township.
The $6.3 million project aims to enhance safety, improve mobility, and accommodate future traffic demands in the area. The roundabout will be constructed slightly south of the existing intersection alignment, featuring a single-lane, four-legged design.
As part of the project, the existing pavement at the current intersection will be removed. Approximately 1,900 feet of Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) will undergo reconstruction and resurfacing, while approximately 1,400 feet of Route 926 (Street Road) will be realigned. The agricultural land to the west of the roundabout will be utilized for stormwater management, providing essential environmental benefits. Additionally, a proposed wetland mitigation area will replace the existing Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) to the east of the roundabout.
The comprehensive project includes various improvements, such as reconstructing the roadway approaches, relocating driveway access points, and installing roundabout lighting, signage, and pavement markings.
Motorists should be prepared for changes in traffic patterns and plan accordingly, as Route 926 (Street Road) will be closed and detoured between Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 796 (Jennersville Road) from Monday, January 22, through late October 2024. During this period, drivers are advised to use Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 796 (Jennersville Road) as alternate routes.
Given the nature of the construction, it is expected that backups and delays will occur in the vicinity of the work area. PennDOT advises drivers to allow extra time for their commutes and remain patient during the project’s duration. It’s important to note that all scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The construction will be carried out in two stages. In the initial stage, Route 926 (Street Road) will be closed and detoured while motorists on Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) will experience lane shifts onto the existing northbound shoulder, allowing for the installation of temporary barriers along the southbound side. During the second stage, both Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) will be closed and detoured.
J. D. Eckman, Inc., based in Atglen, PA, has been entrusted with the responsibility of managing this significant infrastructure project. The funding for the roundabout project is provided entirely through federal funds.
As the construction begins, the community eagerly anticipates the completion of this project, which will undoubtedly enhance safety and improve traffic flow at this busy intersection in Londonderry Township.
