U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA)

Mairéad Lynn, a spokesperson for U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), issued the following statement following the Senator’s successful surgery yesterday for prostate cancer:

“This afternoon, Senator Casey underwent scheduled surgery for prostate cancer. His doctor reports that, as expected, the procedure went well and he confirmed that the Senator should not require further treatment.  Senator Casey and his family appreciate the well-wishes and extraordinary support from every corner of the Commonwealth, and he looks forward to getting back to a normal schedule after a period of rest and recovery.”

Prostate cancer is a serious issue that affects a large number of men each year. According to the American Cancer Society, the estimated number of new cases in 2023 is expected to be around 288,300, with 34,700 cases resulting in death. Unfortunately, the rate of diagnosis for advanced-stage prostate cancer has been increasing by 5% per year since 2014.

The severity of this potential health complication underscores the importance of being aware and educated about prostate cancer. As 1 man in 8 will be diagnosed with it during his lifetime, taking preventative measures should be highly considered. Along with skin cancer, it is one of the most common among men and is also the second leading cause of cancer death in American men behind lung cancer – making it even more imperative that individuals understand its risks and effects.
