WEST CHESTER, PA — A resolution has been reached between the Chester County Health Department and the St. Agnes Day Room, ensuring the continuation of the nonprofit’s mission to serve the community. State Rep. Chris Pielli, D-Chester, who advocated for a solution, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome.
The St. Agnes Day Room, a trusted nonprofit in operation for over three decades, provides critical support to vulnerable residents, including meals, clothing, and other essential services for those facing poverty and homelessness. The organization’s ability to continue operating had been called into question following regulatory challenges related to food safety enforcement. Despite state-level exemptions for nonprofits, the Chester County Health Department’s adherence to food safety regulations put the Day Room at risk of closure.
“I am extremely happy to hear that County Health Department officials and the good folks of the St. Agnes Day Room have come upon a working solution to enable the Day Room staff to continue their 32-year-old mission of providing refuge and support to many who have nowhere else to turn,” Pielli said.
Pielli, drawing on his experience as a former program director for homeless veterans, actively engaged both the Day Room and county officials to facilitate a resolution. “Since learning about this months-long issue, I have met with both the St. Agnes Day Room staff and county officials several times in hopes of coming to a resolution acceptable to both parties,” Pielli added. “I commend their hard work and thank them for overcoming any obstacles that delayed the continuation of the Day Room’s valuable mission to our community.”
This resolution comes as a relief to the community, ensuring that the St. Agnes Day Room can carry on its vital work of addressing food insecurity and providing critical resources for individuals and families in need. Moving forward, the nonprofit’s efforts remain an indispensable pillar of support for West Chester’s most vulnerable residents, reinforcing the value of collaborative solutions to community challenges.
