BERWYN, PA — Melmark, a leading provider of services for individuals with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, hosted its biennial fundraising event, The Dream Maker’s Ball: Melmark Generations, at the Crystal Tea Room in Philadelphia on April 20th. The gala, attended by over 200 supporters, celebrated decades of commitment to Melmark’s mission through an evening filled with awards, auctions, and live performances.
The event featured The Melmark Players from Melmark’s Meadows Program and local band Del’s Groove, providing entertainment that underscored the talents and joy within the community Melmark serves. Fundraising efforts included silent and live auctions, ticket sales, sponsorships, and a rapid round of “speed donating,” aiming to support critical health and wellness projects on Melmark’s Berwyn campus. These projects include the expansion of its healthcare center, the construction of a new activities center, and a staff gym, all designed to enhance the quality of life for those at Melmark.
Highlighting the gala was an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions to Melmark’s mission. Simkiss & Block, a Philadelphia-based insurance agency, received the Good Neighbor Award for over a decade of philanthropy and volunteerism that aligns closely with Melmark’s work. Pennsylvania State Senator Carolyn T. Comitta was awarded the Humanitarian Award for her public service and advocacy efforts that mirror Melmark’s dedication to improving lives within the disability community. In her acceptance speech, Comitta emphasized the progress from awareness to acceptance in communities, attributing it to the dedication of advocates and professionals.
Frank L. Bird, M.Ed., LABA, BCBA, CDE®, Executive Vice President of Clinical Services at Melmark, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 25 years of service. His contributions have significantly impacted Melmark’s ability to serve individuals across its divisions in Pennsylvania, New England, and the Carolinas, advancing the field of behavioral analysis for future generations.
Rita M. Gardner, M.P.H., LABA, BCBA, CDE®, President and CEO of Melmark, concluded the evening by reaffirming the organization’s unwavering commitment to its mission. “Tonight’s celebration is rooted in close to 60 years of mission-driven work to serve those who need it most,” stated Gardner, highlighting the organization’s vision for a world where individuals with disabilities achieve their fullest potential and live fulfilling lives.
The Dream Maker’s Ball not only showcased Melmark’s enduring dedication to its community but also highlighted the critical role of support and advocacy in advancing the well-being of individuals with disabilities.
