WEST CHESTER, PA —The Fund for Women and Girls announced a Zoom luncheon to inspire civic engagement on October 19, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is free at https://www.thefundcc.org/events/.
Jahnavi Rao, founder and president of the youth-led nonprofit New Voters, will share how she started a nonprofit in her Chester County high school and explain the work that New Voters does to engage youth and first-time voters. Jahnavi’s vision is simple: comprehensive youth civic engagement in America.
The event will excite and encourage women and girls to take an active role in shaping their communities and contributing to positive societal change.
A Fund grantee nonprofit, New Voters, began as a high school club in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, where founder Jahnavi Rao was a student, and soon registered over 85% of eligible students for the 2018 midterm election. That year, New Voters expanded to dozens of schools in Pennsylvania and officially became a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
“My peers and I found our voices in politics when the laws of our land said we could, not before we were old enough to vote, and we have not stopped speaking out since,” says Jahnavi Rao.
In 2020, New Voters launched nationally and recruited their team of 50+ interns and directors to expand the reach of their school registration model. Since their inception, they have impacted over 300,000 high school students, registering over 80,000 high school students to vote, and working with student leaders in 39 states.
