THORNDALE, PA — Handi-Crafters Opportunity Center has announced that Habitat for Humanity of Chester County ReStores will be honored with the 2025 Community Partner of the Year Award. The award recognizes organizations whose commitment and collaboration have expanded opportunities for individuals served by Handi-Crafters, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering people with disabilities through meaningful employment and community inclusion.
“Handi-Crafters is excited to celebrate our partnership with the Habitat for Humanity ReStores, which has grown tremendously over the past two years,” said April Ennis-Pierson, Executive Director at Handi-Crafters. “What started as occasional volunteer visits has blossomed into a weekly tradition at both the Caln and Phoenixville locations. Our clients aren’t just helpers — they’ve become part of the ReStore family.”
Over the past two years, Handi-Crafters’ clients have volunteered regularly at both ReStore locations, performing tasks such as cleaning bathrooms, restocking shelves, arranging furniture, organizing books and movies, and assisting customers. This partnership has allowed clients to develop essential work and life skills while building meaningful relationships.
“Our folks get to meet new people, build relationships with customers and staff, and develop valuable work and life skills,” said John Baer, Community Participation Services Coordinator at Handi-Crafters. “Some of our clients were shy at first, but thanks to the warm welcome from the ReStore team, they’ve blossomed into confident, contributing members of the crew.”
Stacy Bagent, ReStore Operations Director for Habitat for Humanity of Chester County ReStores, praised the Handi-Crafters volunteers for their dedication and impact. “The consistent and dedicated support from the Handi-Crafters team has created a more organized and welcoming environment in both of our ReStore locations. Their routine has become an important part of our weekly operations,” she said.
Beyond the work itself, the partnership has had a lasting personal impact, as demonstrated by clients like Willie, who has become a beloved figure at both locations. Whether diligently taking out trash before leaving or earning praise from customers for his meticulous sidewalk cleaning, Willie exemplifies the values Handi-Crafters strives to foster.
The Community Partner of the Year Award will be formally presented to Habitat for Humanity of Chester County ReStores during Handi-Crafters’ Annual Spring Benefit Evening on Thursday, May 1, 2025. The event, presented by Bentley Systems, will also honor Herr Foods with the Best Friend of the Year Award for its exceptional dedication to supporting Handi-Crafters’ mission.
