NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police have arrested several individuals in connection with a shooting that occurred outside the Biden Welcome Center last month, resulting in multiple charges of robbery, assault, and related offenses.
The incident took place early on December 1, 2024, when troopers responded to reports of a shooting in the center’s parking lot. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim, later identified as 45-year-old Orenzo Charles of Goshen, New York, who had sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities stated that the incident began with an altercation over drugs, during which a suspect reportedly fired shots, striking Charles.
Charles, who was initially identified as the victim, was later discovered to have been in possession of approximately 265.59 grams of marijuana in his vehicle. Investigative efforts led to his arrest on felony drug charges.
Following a detailed investigation involving out-of-state law enforcement, five additional suspects were identified and taken into custody on varying dates. They include a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old from Delaware, as well as 18-year-olds Trajuan Wilmot, Bryson Ridgley, and Miguel Matthews, all from Maryland. Charges against the suspects include first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and conspiracy.
Charles was released on an unsecured bond following his arraignment, while the other suspects remain in custody with bonds ranging from $62,000 to $182,000.
Law enforcement officials have reiterated that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Further developments in the case are expected as the investigation continues.
