GLASGOW, DE — A Newark man faces multiple charges, including vehicular assault, following a deadly two-vehicle collision in Glasgow on Tuesday night. The Delaware State Police continue to investigate the incident and have not ruled out additional charges.
The crash occurred on January 21, 2025, around 10:39 p.m., when a 2019 Dodge Ram truck, traveling southbound on DE-896, was struck at the Pulaski Highway intersection by a 2004 Chevrolet Express van allegedly driven by 28-year-old Fidel Villatoro-Martinez. Preliminary findings indicate the Dodge proceeded through the intersection on a green light, while the Chevrolet entered on a red light, resulting in the collision.
The Dodge’s driver, identified as 51-year-old David Funk of Centreville, Maryland, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He succumbed to those injuries the following day. His 16-year-old male passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized.
Villatoro-Martinez was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. During the investigation, police reported detecting the smell of alcohol on Villatoro-Martinez and noted the presence of alcoholic beverage containers in the vehicle. Troopers suspect impairment was a contributing factor in the crash.
Villatoro-Martinez has been charged with offenses including first-degree vehicular assault, DUI, and running a red light, among others. He was arraigned and is being held on a $3,500 secured bond.
The roadway was closed for approximately two and a half hours during the investigation and cleanup. The Delaware State Police Traffic Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to look into the incident.
Authorities emphasize that all charges are allegations, and Villatoro-Martinez is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
