PHILADELPHIA, PA — Mason Williams-Surzano, 20, of Philadelphia, has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release for his role in two violent carjackings committed within hours of each other in December 2023. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Karen S. Marston on January 8, 2025.
Williams-Surzano pleaded guilty in September to charges stemming from the carjackings, which included aiding and abetting the brandishing of a firearm during a crime of violence. The incidents occurred on December 13 and 14, 2023, involving two victims.
The first carjacking took place on December 13 at approximately 6:30 p.m., when Williams-Surzano and three accomplices confronted a man at gunpoint near 1700 Brill Street, forcing him to surrender his 2016 Volkswagen Passat. Philadelphia police later recovered the vehicle just a few hours and half a mile away.
The second crime occurred on December 14, around 1:10 a.m., when Williams-Surzano and the same group threatened another victim in the area of 1600 Sparks Street, seizing his 2017 Kia Forte. Both crimes left victims traumatized but uninjured.
“Imagine staring down the barrel of a gun as a criminal crew demands your car,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. “Anyone committing a carjacking — let alone two in just a few hours — is a clear danger to our community. We and our partners on the Philadelphia Carjacking Task Force are working every day to make this city safer by identifying, prosecuting, and bringing to justice offenders like Williams-Surzano.”
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Philadelphia Police Department, with the case prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Michael R. Miller and Kwambina I. Coker.
