Teen Tragedy in Newark: 13-Year-Old Charged with Murder in Deadly Shooting

NEWARK, DE — A 19-year-old man was fatally shot on Sunday afternoon in the Kimberton community, leading to the arrest of a 13-year-old suspect, authorities have announced.

At approximately 3:06 p.m. on March 16, officers from the New Castle County Division of Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots on the unit block of Clarion Court. Upon arrival, officers found that gunfire had struck two residences in the area. Shortly after, police were notified that a gunshot victim had been brought to Christiana Hospital by private vehicle.

The victim, identified as Jahliel Jackson, sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite medical efforts, Jackson was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Evidence Detection Unit assumed the investigation, ultimately identifying a 13-year-old male from Wilmington as the suspect. The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with the following offenses:

  • One count of Murder in the First Degree
  • One count of Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited under the age of 21
  • One count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony

The suspect was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and remanded to the New Castle County Detention Center, with bail set at $170,000 in cash.
