NEW CASTLE, DE — Authorities have launched an investigation into a tragic motor vehicle crash in the community of Holloway Terrace that resulted in the death of a 72-year-old man. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, April 19, 2025, has led to multiple charges against the alleged driver involved.
At approximately 11:59 a.m. on April 19, patrol officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the 500 block of West Avenue following reports of a crash involving a black GMC Terrain, a gray Chevrolet Traverse, and an electric scooter.
According to police, 72-year-old John Christiansen of New Castle was seated on his electric scooter at the end of a driveway when the GMC Terrain left the roadway, veered onto the grass, and struck him. The impact hurled Mr. Christiansen onto the northbound lane of West Avenue. The GMC reportedly continued forward into a parked Chevrolet Traverse before coming to a stop.
Emergency responders transported Mr. Christiansen to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Despite exhaustive life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
The driver of the GMC Terrain, identified as 45-year-old Roland Fleming, was taken into custody at the scene. He was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was charged with vehicular assault in the first degree and driving under the influence.
The New Castle County Division of Police Traffic Services Unit responded to the scene and has assumed the investigation into the fatal incident. Detectives are gathering additional evidence and seeking assistance from the public.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who possesses surveillance video from the area to come forward.
