NEWARK, DE — A routine traffic stop by Newark Police escalated into a foot pursuit and the apprehension of a Wilmington man who now faces multiple charges, including identity theft, following an incident on April 18, 2025.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded around 5:22 p.m., when officers observed a vehicle displaying a fictitious Pennsylvania registration and conducted a traffic stop. During the interaction, the driver allegedly presented a fraudulent foreign driver’s license as identification.
Upon further questioning, police report that the driver fled the scene on foot, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. The suspect was apprehended after a brief chase, during which no injuries were reported.
Further investigation revealed the suspect’s identity as 34-year-old Freddy Villanueva Alonso of Wilmington, Delaware. Law enforcement officials also discovered that Villanueva Alonso was wanted on an active arrest warrant from another agency for alleged offenses related to identity theft and forgery.
Following the incident, Villanueva Alonso was charged with a series of offenses, including the following:
- Identity Theft
- False Statement
- Criminal Impersonation
- Resisting Arrest
- Five (5) Traffic Offenses
After his arrest, Villanueva Alonso was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and issued a cash bond totaling $9,950. He was subsequently transferred to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, where he remains in custody in default of bail.
