KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Following a traffic incident that occurred last year, Kennett Square Police arrested 37-year-old Matthew McDermott on several charges including alleged fleeing from police and resisting arrest.
The incident dates back to May 21, 2023, when officers on stationary patrol at the intersection of S. Walnut Street and Birch Street noticed a blue and white motorized scooter, similar to a Vespa, without a visible tag. The police initiated a traffic stop in the 200 block of Birch Street, Kennett Square Borough. Upon trying to engage with the operator of the scooter, the individual reportedly started the vehicle and maneuvered around the officer, fleeing the scene westbound towards S. Broad Street.
After further investigation, the police identified the operator as Matthew McDermott, a resident of Newark, Delaware. A criminal complaint was filed against McDermott at District Court 15-3-04 on June 1, 2023, including charges of fleeing and eluding and other related offenses.
McDermott failed to appear for his scheduled preliminary hearing on September 6, 2023, leading to an arrest warrant issued by District Court 15-3-04. On January 10, 2024, McDermott was arrested and arraigned, with a new preliminary hearing scheduled for February 2024.
In addition to the charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police and resisting arrest, McDermott faces allegations of driving while operating privilege is suspended, registration and title required, and required financial responsibility.
It’s important to note that these are charges and do not establish guilt. McDermott, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
