Newark Man Arrested for Alleged Robbery and Vehicle Theft

NEWARK, DEDelaware State Police have apprehended Elvis Cruz, a 51-year-old resident of Newark, in connection with multiple felony charges following an investigation into a stolen vehicle and an earlier robbery at a local Walgreens.

The robbery incident reportedly occurred on October 9, 2024, at approximately 3:32 p.m., at the Walgreens store on Ogletown-Stanton Road. An unidentified male suspect allegedly broke the glass of a display case and seized merchandise. During the escape, the suspect is accused of threatening to shoot a store employee, although no weapon was visible, and no injuries were reported. Subsequent investigations identified Cruz as the suspect, leading to an arrest warrant being issued.

The vehicle theft incident took place on October 27, 2024, when troopers responded to Christiana Hospital on a report of a stolen vehicle. The suspect allegedly took an unattended silver Toyota Corolla that was left idling outside the Women and Children’s Health Center while the driver was delivering food. Security personnel recognized Cruz from previous incidents on hospital grounds, and video surveillance corroborated his involvement. Investigations revealed Cruz had outstanding warrants and an active No Contact Order with the hospital.

Authorities located the stolen vehicle near Cruz’s residence and arrested him without incident. He was subsequently charged and taken to Troop 2 for processing. His charges include Robbery 1st Degree, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Noncompliance with Conditions of Recognizance Bond, and Criminal Mischief. Following his arraignment by Justice of the Peace Court 11, Cruz was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution under a $32,600 cash bond.

As the legal process unfolds, it is imperative to remember that all allegations remain just that, and Cruz is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
