PHILADELPHIA, PA — United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced the sentencing of Anthony Lombardo, 46, from Bristol, Pennsylvania, for assaulting a federal officer. On November 14, 2024, United States District Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro sentenced Lombardo to 54 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The incident that led to Lombardo’s sentencing occurred on the morning of January 17, 2023, at the James A. Byrne U.S. Courthouse in Philadelphia. Lombardo approached the building’s perimeter wielding a large kitchen knife, confronting a court security officer. Despite the officer’s repeated directives to drop the weapon, Lombardo persisted, leading the officer to discharge his firearm, injuring Lombardo. During the subsequent medical response, authorities discovered an additional kitchen knife concealed in Lombardo’s sleeve and makeshift body armor on his torso.
Following his hospitalization and subsequent release in February 2023, Lombardo was charged with assault on a federal officer and placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals. His legal troubles were compounded by his existing state supervision for a previous conviction of aggravated assault on a police officer in 2006.
By April 9, 2024, Lombardo faced formal charges via information and, shortly thereafter, on May 6, he waived prosecution by indictment, opting instead to plead guilty to the federal charge.
U.S. Attorney Romero underscored the gravity of Lombardo’s repeated offenses against law enforcement personnel, stating, “Twice now, Anthony Lombardo has targeted police and security officers with violence. Whatever your goals or grievances, if you try to harm someone working to protect a federal courthouse or facility, rest assured that my office and our partners will work to hold you fully accountable.”
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service, with prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Ashenfelter.
