HARRISBURG, PA — Michael Sarmiento, a 40-year-old Bucks County resident, was found guilty but mentally ill of third-degree murder on Wednesday in connection with the 2021 death of Helena Johnson, a 41-year-old Massachusetts woman. The verdict was handed down by Luzerne County Judge Michael T. Vough following a two-day trial that focused on the evidence surrounding Johnson’s death.
The “guilty but mentally ill” verdict carries the same sentencing guidelines as a standard third-degree murder conviction but allows for Sarmiento to receive mental health treatment while serving his sentence. Johnson’s death was ruled as a result of blunt force trauma inflicted during a violent beating, as revealed during court proceedings.
The case centered on disturbing evidence presented by prosecutors, including testimony that Sarmiento and Johnson were staying together on the night of her death in a motel room at the Red Carpet Inn in Hazle Township. On June 6, 2021, Johnson was discovered deceased in that room. Sarmiento called 911 early on June 5, stating he found Johnson unresponsive in the bathtub.
Surveillance footage was crucial to the prosecution’s case. Video showed the pair entering their motel room together at 6:59 a.m. on June 4, 2021. Two hours later, Sarmiento was seen leaving the room alone. No one else entered during the approximately 15 hours that followed, until Sarmiento returned shortly before calling 911.
A forensic pathologist testified that Johnson suffered at least ten blunt force injuries, along with evidence of strangulation. The graphic nature of the injuries painted a grim picture of the fatal assault.
Attorney General Dave Sunday praised investigators and prosecutors for their work in securing justice for Johnson and her loved ones. “This defendant callously took the life of Ms. Johnson, then attempted to avoid accountability,” Sunday stated. “The investigators and prosecutors in this case were determined to see that justice was done for Helena Johnson. We hope this verdict provides a small amount of peace for those who love her and miss her every day.”
The case was prosecuted by Chief Deputy Attorney General Brian Zarallo and Deputy Attorney General Rachael Coleman. Judge Vough has set Sarmiento’s sentencing for May 1, 2024. Under Pennsylvania law, a third-degree murder conviction can result in a maximum penalty of up to 40 years in prison.
