WILMINGTON, DE — Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a shooting last Friday that left a woman injured.
The incident occurred on March 28, around 8:09 a.m., near North Walnut and Kennebec Streets. Officers from Wilmington’s Uniformed Services Division responded to reports of gunfire and found a 27-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital, where she remains in stable condition.
Detective Jessica Gledhill of the Criminal Investigations Division led the effort to identify the alleged shooter. Following her investigation, authorities identified Jaheim Barkley as the suspect and subsequently obtained warrants for his arrest. On April 1, officers apprehended Barkley in the 1300 block of North French Street without incident. A .40 caliber handgun was also recovered during the operation.
Barkley faces several charges, including Assault in the First Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, and Criminal Mischief Over $1,000. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and transported to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $46,000 secured bail.
Police have reiterated that the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
