PHILADELPHIA, PA — Andrew Garrett, 30, of Steelton, Pennsylvania, was sentenced this week to seven years in prison for his involvement in the 2018 attempted armed robbery of Smithgall’s Pharmacy in Lancaster. This sentencing marks the end of a series of legal proceedings against Garrett and his accomplices, who were charged with attempting to steal prescription opioids, a crime that disrupted community peace and safety.

The events unfolded on October 23, 2018, when Brandon Galette, armed with a firearm provided by Lamar Black, entered the pharmacy to demand prescription opioids. The situation escalated quickly as Galette assaulted a customer and attempted to force pharmacy employees into a back room. However, the prompt and courageous response of the pharmacy owner, who managed to shoot Galette during the confrontation, thwarted the robbery attempt. Galette, severely injured, collapsed outside the pharmacy, leading to the arrest of the conspirators.

Garrett’s co-defendants received their sentences earlier. Galette, 30, of Harrisburg, was sentenced to over 12 years in prison, alongside a significant restitution order. Johnny Straining, another Harrisburg resident, received a 14-year sentence, while Lamar Black was handed a 15-year sentence. Both Straining and Black faced additional charges related to another armed robbery in York, Pennsylvania.

“This attempted armed robbery was a terrifying experience for the employees and customers of Smithgall’s,” stated U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. She emphasized the commitment of her office and law enforcement partners to pursuing justice against armed robbery groups, ensuring the safety of local communities. Echoing this sentiment, Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Philadelphia, remarked, “This sentencing makes clear, even the attempt to commit an armed robbery carries serious consequences.”
