Ex-Employees Charged in $133,000 Check Fraud Scheme in Kennett Square Borough

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kennett Square Police Department has issued arrest warrants for four individuals in connection with a check fraud scheme that allegedly cost a local business approximately $133,000. The suspects, identified as Hilda Domingez-Bastida, 23, Carla Renteria, 31, Michael A. Vilchis-Nava, 48, and Maria De La Luz Vilchis-Nava, 38, are all former employees of the business located on the 300 block of West State Street.

The business owner reported the fraudulent activity in September 2022, stating that they had initially given consent to some employees to write checks for business-related purposes. However, upon closer inspection, the owner discovered that these ex-employees had been writing fraudulent checks since as early as April or May of 2021.

Domingez-Bastida, who stands at 5’0″ tall and weighs about 120 lbs, faces charges including one count of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities, two counts of theft by unlawful taking or disposition, two counts of receiving stolen property, and two counts of theft by deception.

Renteria, who stands at 5’3″ tall and weighs about 215 lbs, is facing similar charges, along with additional counts of access device fraud, computer trespass, and theft by failure to make disposition.

Michael A. Vilchis-Nava, who stands at 5’7″ tall and weighs about 160 lbs, is also facing similar charges, along with one count of access device fraud and one count of computer trespass.

Maria De La Luz Vilchis-Nava, who stands at 5’0″ tall and weighs about 160 lbs, is facing similar charges as well, including one count of access device fraud and one count of computer trespass.

The arrest warrants were granted on November 17, 2023, for Domingez-Bastida, Renteria, and Michael A. Vilchis-Nava, and on November 15, 2023, for Maria De La Luz Vilchis-Nava by District Court 15-3-04.
