NEWPORT, DE — Delaware State Police are conducting an intensive investigation following a fatal shooting that occurred late Wednesday night at a gas station in Newport.
On February 5, 2025, at approximately 9:10 p.m., authorities responded to reports of a shooting in the parking lot of the Exxon gas station located at 20 N. James Street within Newport town limits. Upon their arrival, officers found a 23-year-old male from New Castle suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officials have not released the victim’s identity, pending notification of his next of kin.
The Newport Police Department requested assistance from the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit to take charge of the case following the initial response. Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that two groups had arranged to meet at the gas station for a confrontation. During the altercation, an unidentified suspect reportedly produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds, striking the victim. The suspect then fled the scene in an unidentified vehicle.
