WEST CHESTER, PA — On Thursday, a jury convicted Randolph Green, 63, of Coatesville, PA, of aggravated assault, DUI, recklessly endangering another person, and related offenses for running over a victim with his Hummer sport utility vehicle while intoxicated, announced the Chester County District Attorney’s Office. The defendant had an argument with the victim prior to the incident, ran him over with his Hummer, dragging his body several yards, and causing serious bodily injury. He will be sentenced at a later date.

“The defendant used his car as a death machine with no regard for the value of human life. He taunted and threatened the victim, bumping him in the chest with the Hummer and then ultimately followed through on his threats to run him over, seriously injuring the victim,” said Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan. “The victim is extremely fortunate that he is alive today. We thank the City of Coatesville Police Department for their investigation into this matter and the jury for this just result.”

According to Deputy District Attorney Kathleen Wright, on July 10, 2021, at approximately 9:58 p.m., police officers from the City of Coatesville Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of North Fourth Avenue and East Diamond Street for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. At the location, officers spoke to Randolph Green, who stated that he had a verbal argument with the victim earlier in the evening. Green also admitted that he ran the victim over with his car.

Officers on scene observed the defendant to have a heavy odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and other indicators of intoxication. The defendant stated that he had consumed approximately four beers and several shots beginning at approximately at 7:00 p.m. The defendant refused to complete a standard field sobriety test, stating “I’m drunk.” The defendant agreed to submit to a blood test and his BAC was over a .18%.

The incident was captured on surveillance camera footage where the defendant rapidly accelerated his vehicle in the direction of the victim, striking him in the chest. The defendant then backed his vehicle back into his driveway and turned it off. Seconds later, while the victim was standing right in front of the vehicle, the defendant then eased the Hummer to the edge of the driveway and rapidly accelerated to the right onto the curb area exactly where the victim was standing, striking him with the front of the Hummer and dragging him under the vehicle for several yards, causing serious bodily injury. The victim was treated at Paoli Memorial Hospital for almost a week for numerous broken bones and a punctured lung.

Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan commended the City of Coatesville Police Department for the investigation which led to the successful prosecution of Green. Deputy District Attorney Kathleen Wright is the assigned prosecutor.
