WEST CALN TWP, PA — In a case that has shaken the local community, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office and the West Caln Township Police Department have announced the arrests of Rendell Hoagland, 52, and Cindy Warren, 45, on charges related to the tragic death of 12-year-old Malinda Hoagland. Rendell Hoagland, the girl’s father, and Cindy Warren, his girlfriend, face allegations of Attempted Criminal Homicide, Aggravated Assault, and Kidnapping, among other charges.

The couple was arrested on May 6, 2024, by Chester County Detectives and arraigned Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge J. Timothy Arndt III, who set bail at $1 million each. They are currently held at the Chester County Prison, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 13, 2024. Authorities are awaiting further medical evidence before deciding on additional charges, including potential charges of Murder.

District Attorney Christopher L. de Barrena-Sarobe expressed his determination to achieve justice for Malinda, stating, “Malinda was subjected to evil and torment that no child should ever have to endure.” The case, described by West Caln Police Chief Curt Martinez as a “horrific case of child abuse,” came to light following a distressing 911 call made by Rendell Hoagland on May 4, reporting his daughter unresponsive.

Upon arrival, first responders were confronted with the dire state of Malinda’s health, leading to her immediate transport to Paoli Hospital Trauma Center. Despite urgent medical attention, Malinda succumbed to her injuries, weighing only 50 pounds and showing signs of severe malnourishment and physical abuse, including multiple broken bones and failing organs.

Investigations revealed disturbing details of Malinda’s life leading up to her death. Pulled out of public school for home cyber schooling late the previous year, evidence suggests she was subjected to cruel punishment and neglect. Examination of the defendants’ cell phones and home surveillance footage indicated Malinda was often ankle-cuffed to furniture, verbally berated, and forced into strenuous physical exercise, while being denied meals for perceived slights.

The comprehensive investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, led by the Chester County Detectives, with First Assistant District Attorney Erin O’Brien appointed as the prosecutor. This case has mobilized a broad coalition of local police departments, highlighting the community-wide impact of this tragedy.

While the allegations paint a grim picture of abuse, it is important to remember that both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
