Arrests Made in Connection to 2019 Cold Case Murder in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DEWilmington Police have announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with a 2019 cold case murder, a shooting, and a shots-fired incident.

On December 28, 2019, officers responded to the 1300 block of East 29th Street for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they located James Pinkett, 67, who later died from his injuries. The case was initially assigned to Detective Mackenzie Kirlin of the Criminal Investigations Division and later taken on by the Cold Case Unit.

Following an extensive investigation, 22-year-olds Dion Young and Ameer Dunn were identified as suspects, with Young also alleged to be involved in two other incidents. On December 24, 2019, a shooting on New Castle Avenue left a 20-year-old male injured. Two days later, on December 26, officers responded to a shots-fired incident on East 9th Street, where no injuries were reported. Both cases were investigated by Detective Brendan Wham.

A grand jury indictment for Young and Dunn was returned on December 16, 2024. Young, who remains incarcerated on unrelated charges, faces 34 offenses, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder and firearm possession. He is being held on $1.5 million cash-only bail.

Dunn was apprehended in Houston, Texas, and extradited to Delaware on January 23, 2025. He faces 19 charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, among other offenses. Dunn is being held on $866,000 cash-only bail.

Officials emphasize that these remain allegations, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
