Armed Suspects Caught After High-Stakes Chase in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE — Two men were arrested after a police pursuit in Wilmington led to the recovery of two firearms, including a stolen handgun, on the afternoon of February 20.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers from the Uniformed Services Division attempted to conduct a vehicle stop in the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue around 3:20 p.m. The vehicle reportedly fled the scene, and a short time later, it was located in the 2100 block of West 11th Street.

Police stated that two male occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Following a brief chase, officers apprehended 25-year-old Dewitt Johnson of Newark, DE, and 30-year-old Deshaun Alston of Marcus Hook, PA, without incident.

During the investigation, authorities recovered a loaded 5.56mm AR-15-style rifle and a loaded 9mm handgun, which had been reported stolen.

Johnson faces charges including two counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of a large-capacity magazine during the commission of a felony, receiving a stolen firearm, resisting arrest, and traffic violations. He is currently held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $63,000 cash-only bail.

Alston also faces two counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of a large-capacity magazine during the commission of a felony, receiving a stolen firearm, and resisting arrest. He has been committed to the same correctional facility with bail set at $104,000 cash-only.

Authorities emphasize that all allegations remain under investigation. Both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
