Armed Carjacker Faces Justice: 16-Year Sentence for Violent Delaware County Spree

Court News

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Jamar Miller, a 24-year-old from Claymont, Delaware, has been sentenced to 190 months in federal prison for his role in two armed carjackings, as announced by United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. Chief Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg of the United States District Court delivered the sentence on Thursday, which also includes three years of supervised release and a requirement to pay $1,919 in restitution.

The charges against Miller arose from a pair of violent incidents in January 2023, both occurring in Delaware County. Each event involved Miller driving accomplices to a Wawa convenience store where the carjackings took place. On January 14, at a location on Route 322 in Upper Chichester Township, a 23-year-old college student was ambushed by two men, including Miller’s codefendant, Keenan Righter. The attackers, armed and masked, demanded the victim’s vehicle, assaulting him with a firearm before fleeing the scene. Miller followed in his own car, acting as a getaway driver.

Just ten days later, on January 24, the group targeted another victim at a Wawa on Edgmont Avenue in Brookhaven. In a similar fashion, the perpetrators used firearms and masks to intimidate the 33-year-old victim, again resorting to violence by pistol-whipping him and stealing his vehicle and personal belongings. Miller’s role remained the same, facilitating the escape in his own vehicle.

Following his indictment in April 2023, Miller chose to plead guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit carjacking, carjacking, and using a firearm during a crime of violence. His accomplice, Righter, opted for a trial, resulting in a conviction on all counts and a subsequent sentence of 280 months in prison.

Addressing the court’s decision, U.S. Attorney Romero highlighted the severity of Miller’s actions, noting, “Jamar Miller drove his co-conspirators to the crime scenes, watched as they violently carjacked two innocent people, and followed as they fled in the stolen vehicles.” She stressed the message that any involvement in such crimes, even a supporting role, can lead to severe federal penalties.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs underscored the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts, stating, “Today’s sentencing demonstrates how strong partnerships in law enforcement contribute to safer communities.” The investigation was a joint effort involving the FBI Philadelphia’s Newtown Square Resident Agency, the Brookhaven and Upper Chichester Police Departments.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorneys Brian Doherty and Branwen McNabb O’Donnell.
