73-Year-Old Delaware Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal Porch Shooting

Court News

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man has pled guilty to charges stemming from the 2024 fatal shooting of Kevin Harris.

On March 14, Bernard Stewart, 73, entered guilty pleas to charges of Manslaughter and Possession of a Destructive Weapon. The plea follows an investigation by the Wilmington Police Department into the July 4, 2024, incident that claimed the life of Harris, 49.

The shooting occurred on Stewart’s porch at North Lombard Street and East 10th Street, where a confrontation escalated. Feeling threatened after a previous altercation, Stewart used a shotgun to shoot Harris once in the head, resulting in his death on the scene.

“This senseless tragedy was the result of guns being used as a permanent solution to a temporary dispute,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “This was a terrible and preventable loss, and our hearts remain with the victim’s family at this difficult time.”

Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos commended officers and investigators for their swift actions in making an arrest. “I hope this guilty plea brings some measure of comfort to the victim’s family, in the wake of this senseless act of violence,” Campos added.

With his guilty plea, Stewart now faces sentencing for the charges, marking a step toward resolution in the case.
