PAOLI, PA — In a significant step towards addressing the critical issue of child care accessibility, State Representative Melissa Shusterman, Democrat from Chester County, recently participated in the States Convening on Child Care forum held at The White House. This gathering brought together over 60 legislators from more than 30 states, all committed to finding innovative solutions to make child care more affordable and accessible for working families.

The forum served as a platform for legislators to share successful strategies implemented in their respective states, focusing on improving the recruitment and retention of skilled child care workers and enhancing the quality of care. Representative Shusterman, a staunch advocate for child care reform, highlighted the progress Pennsylvania has made in expanding access to these crucial services.

Reflecting on the achievements in her state, Shusterman remarked, “Last year in the commonwealth with the expansion of our Child and Dependent Care Enhancement Tax Credit, we made it a little easier for families to balance working and finding proper care for their children. It was an honor to share the progress Pennsylvania has made when it comes to increasing access to child care. We’ve taken some crucial steps, but there is still more work to do, and I hope we can implement some of the successful programs created by my fellow legislators from across the country to help even more Pennsylvanians.”

Child care accessibility is not just a policy issue but a vital economic concern that affects countless working families. In recent years, the cost of child care has soared, placing a significant financial burden on parents. The forum emphasized the importance of legislative action to alleviate these pressures and ensure that quality child care is within reach for all families.

Shusterman’s involvement in this initiative is part of her broader legislative agenda focusing on family support and economic equity. Her co-sponsorship of House Bill 1259, signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro, marked a considerable advancement in state policy. The law expanded the state’s Child and Dependent Care Enhancement Tax Credit, providing a 100% match for the federal tax credit. As a result, nearly a quarter million of Pennsylvania’s working families benefited from a more than threefold increase in their child care tax credit.

By making child care more affordable, families can achieve greater financial stability, and parents can more easily participate in the workforce. This, in turn, contributes to a more robust economy and fosters a supportive environment for children to thrive.

The discussions at the White House forum signify a unified commitment among legislators to address child care challenges with urgency and innovation. As these leaders continue to collaborate and share successful models, the potential for transformative change in child care accessibility and quality remains promising, offering hope to families across the nation.
