WEST CHESTER, PA — In the wake of a tragic loss, the community of West Chester finds itself mourning the passing of an irreplaceable icon, Phillip Barnard Donley. Hailing from the coal mining town of Wheeling, West Virginia, Donley’s life journey was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving a profound mark on the fields of physical therapy, athletic training, and education.
A retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, Donley’s career achievements alone could fill volumes. However, one of his greatest accomplishments lies in the profound impact he made as the visionary architect and founder of the athletic training education program at what was then West Chester State College, now known as West Chester University. Arriving in 1965, he dedicated himself to shaping the program into a nationally acclaimed standard of excellence, a testament to his unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of professionals. He would occupy the role of Head Athletic Trainer and Professor of Physical Education until 1991.
Donley’s eminence soared in the 1980s with the establishment of his private clinic, Chester County Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, nestled in the heart of West Chester. It was here that he fervently pursued his love for baseball, specializing in rehabilitating elbow and shoulder injuries in pitchers and position players. His groundbreaking methods and expertise earned him nationwide recognition, attracting a decade-long collaboration with the Philadelphia Phillies. Revered orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Craig Morgan, bestowed upon him the title of “guru” when it came to all matters throwing rehabilitation related. Notably, Donley also served as a consultant to the Philadelphia Eagles for five years, further cementing his status as an authority in the field.
Amidst his illustrious career, Donley’s achievements formed an impressive list: from his integral roles at the 1980 Winter Olympics and the 1996 Summer Olympics to delivering over 220 captivating talks and presenting 35 original papers on Sports Medicine. A passionate educator, he taught 48 comprehensive two-day continuing education courses and served as a consultant to sixteen sports medicine clinics and universities.
However, beyond the accolades and professional triumphs, it was the essence of Donley’s character that left an indelible impact on all who encountered him. In addition to his warmth and ever-present smile, he always demonstrated genuine authenticity and good humor, making him approachable and cherished by everyone. He possessed an appreciation for life that was contagious, and routinely saw the goodness in everyone.
I had the privilege of crossing paths with Donley when I was just twelve years old. Little did I know then the profound impact he would have on my life as a clinician, mentor, and cherished friend. I am not alone in this sentiment, as Donley became a guiding light for countless individuals pursuing careers in Athletic Training and Physical Therapy. Remarkably, he remained actively involved in helping clients until just last year, setting a record of dedication that will never be surpassed.
I had the honor of maintaining a close connection with Donley over the years, cherishing our bond until his passing. We spoke on the telephone once a month, with our last conversation occurring on Father’s Day of this year, a fitting moment that symbolized the significant role he played in my life. His contact number will forever remain preserved in my phone, a constant reminder of his lasting presence.
For all those fortunate enough to have benefitted from Donley’s tutelage, we must pause to recognize the extraordinary privilege of having been in the presence of such an esteemed professional, genuinely compassionate human being, and an individual once filled with endless love and grace. His life serves as an enduring lesson, reminding us to live a sermon rather than merely preach one. As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, let us honor his memory by carrying forward the wisdom and kindness he so generously bestowed upon us all.
