PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a significant weekend closure of eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the Grays Ferry area of Philadelphia. From 9:00 PM on Friday, October 11, until 7:00 AM on Sunday, October 13, the expressway will be closed for essential bridge deck repair work.
The closure extends from after the ramp to Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B) to just before the 34th Street on-ramp. To mitigate traffic disruption, a regional detour directs motorists via I-676 East (Vine Street Expressway) to I-95 South or I-476 South to I-95 North. Local traffic will be rerouted to exit at Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue and use the University Avenue Bridge/34th Street to access I-76 East.
Throughout the closure, all ramps to and from I-76 East will remain operational. Electronic message boards will advise drivers of the closure and recommended detour routes. This initiative is being coordinated with the City of Philadelphia, regional sports complexes, SEPTA, and other transportation entities to ensure a smooth operation.
The repairs aim to address deteriorated concrete sections and resurface the bridge carrying I-76 East over the Schuylkill River, CSX rail tracks, and adjacent areas. Motorists are urged to avoid the closure zone to prevent congestion on I-76 East and nearby streets.
