PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of nighttime paving and roadway repair operations on the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia. This ambitious $37.9 million project aims to enhance nearly five miles of the expressway, including the on-and-off ramps and over 20 bridges, to ensure smoother and safer travel for motorists.
Motorists should be aware of the following upcoming travel restrictions:
- Monday, October 14, to Thursday, October 17: Lane closures will be in effect nightly from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM on sections of both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the Montgomery Drive and 30th Street Station interchanges. These closures will accommodate important paving and concrete repairs.
- Tuesday, October 15, and Wednesday, October 16: The ramp from westbound I-76 to Girard Avenue will be closed from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. During this time, traffic will be detoured to continue on westbound I-76, exit at Montgomery Drive, and use the ramp to eastbound I-76 to reach Girard Avenue.
- Also on October 15 and 16: The ramp from Spring Garden Street to westbound I-76 will be closed for milling operations, with motorists advised to follow the posted detour routes.
In addition to the nighttime restrictions, motorists should note the complete closure of eastbound I-76 in the Grays Ferry section for bridge deck repairs over the weekend. From 9:00 PM on Friday, October 11, to 7:00 AM on Sunday, October 13, I-76 East will be closed between the Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue exit and the 34th Street on-ramp. Regional detours will redirect traffic via I-676 East to I-95 South or I-476 South to I-95 North.
Local traffic affected by this closure will be directed to exit at Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue and use the University Avenue Bridge and 34th Street to access I-76 East. All ramps to and from I-76 East will remain open during the weekend closure.
