LOWER POTTSGROVE TWP, PA — In an announcement from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the shift of eastbound U.S. 422 traffic has been postponed to Monday, September 30, due to recent adverse weather conditions. This traffic shift signifies the initiation of Stage 2 in PennDOT’s extensive $83.6 million project, which aims to reconstruct and enhance a 2.1-mile stretch of the expressway, as well as replace several bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County.
Starting at 9:00 AM on September 30, through 5:00 AM the following morning, a single lane traffic pattern will be implemented on eastbound U.S. 422 between Keim Street and Evergreen Road at the Sanatoga Interchange. Motorists traveling through this area should anticipate potential delays and are encouraged to allocate additional travel time. It is important to note that all construction activities are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
Upon the completion of Stage 2, anticipated by late 2025, traffic on eastbound U.S. 422 will transition onto a newly reconstructed pavement. Subsequently, the westbound traffic will be adjusted to the median, marking the commencement of Stage 3, which focuses on westbound reconstruction.
The Section M1B project encompasses significant enhancements to the expressway. Improvements include the reconstruction of U.S. 422 on both its existing and realigned routes to improve horizontal curves, shoulder widths, and vertical clearances to bolster overall travel safety. Additionally, the project involves the removal and replacement of a culvert at Sprogels Run, located just east of Porter Road, as well as the existing single-span bridge over Porter Road, with a contemporary two-span bridge. The bridge spanning Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek will also undergo reconstruction and widening.
