Your Commute Alert: Crucial I-76 Overnight Repairs May Affect Your Route!

Traffic Advisory

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A significant roadway repair initiative is set to commence on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia, as announced by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). This project, valued at $37.9 million, aims to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the expressway, involving extensive work on the interstate itself, as well as its various on-and-off ramps and over 20 bridges.

The repair schedule kicks off this weekend, with single and double lane closures on eastbound I-76 between the U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and I-676 interchanges, occurring from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM on both Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5. Moving into next week, from Monday, October 7, through Thursday, October 10, similar lane closures will affect both eastbound and westbound directions between the Montgomery Drive and 30th Street Station interchanges from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM for paving and concrete repairs.

Additional closures include the ramp from westbound I-76 to Girard Avenue on Tuesday, October 8, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Motorists will be directed to a detour via Montgomery Drive to access Girard Avenue. Similarly, the ramp from Spring Garden Street to westbound I-76 will be closed the same night, with a detour guiding drivers to the expressway.

These repairs are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and safety of the Schuylkill Expressway, which is a vital artery for both local and through traffic, supporting daily commutes and regional commerce. As such, the project includes milling and overlaying pavement, repairing concrete bases, shoulders, and barriers, adjusting inlet grades, replacing signs, and updating pavement markings.
