DOVER, DE — The Delaware Forest Service’s annual Arbor Day celebration, held on April 26 at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, turned into a showcase of young talent as children from across the state were honored for their creative depictions of the theme “Trees are Terrific…For Outdoor Adventures!” Surrounded by a supportive crowd of family, educators, legislators, and officials, these budding artists were recognized for their contributions to raising awareness about the benefits of spending time outdoors.

The event, marking its 20th year, has grown into a significant educational initiative under the Delaware Forest Service, emphasizing the role of trees and conservation in enhancing community life and sustaining ecosystems. According to Delaware State Forester Kyle Hoyd, the Arbor Day poster contest and educational programming have become keystone events that foster environmental stewardship among the youth, ultimately extending their learning to their families.

This year’s contest, drawing participation from over 70 schools with more than 5,300 students, underscores the widespread engagement in conservation efforts among Delaware’s school-aged population. The theme was carefully chosen to highlight the manifold advantages of outdoor activities, not only for physical health and stress reduction but also for fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Complementing this year’s theme, the Delaware Forest Service has entered a partnership with Delaware Libraries, tying into the 2024 National Summer Reading theme “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” This collaboration aims to bridge literacy and environmental awareness, encouraging kids to explore the adventures awaiting in their local outdoors alongside those found in books.

The posters were evaluated based on criteria such as originality, adherence to theme, neatness, and artistic expression. Winners, hailed from each county in four different grade categories, received prizes including gift cards, tree-themed books, and a tree planting at their respective schools. Among the winners, Melody Wang from North Star Elementary stood out, clinching the overall state title.

The celebratory event also provided an opportunity for the winners to be photographed with their artwork and receive certificates from high-profile attendees, including State Forester Hoyd, Secretary of Agriculture Michael T. Scuse, and other dignitaries. This personal recognition from Delaware’s leading figures in agriculture, education, and natural resources highlighted the state’s commitment to nurturing young environmental advocates.

By integrating art, education, and environmental conservation, the Arbor Day poster contest serves as a vital platform for engaging Delaware’s youth in meaningful discussions about sustainability and the importance of green spaces. It not only celebrates the artistic talents of its participants but also instills in them the values of environmental stewardship, ensuring that the future of Delaware’s natural landscapes is in informed and caring hands.
