WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Director of Real Estate and Housing Robert Weir recently held a Networking and Information Session to promote affordable homeownership for eligible city residents. The event, held at the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, attracted over 80 attendees, including realtors, developers, mortgage brokers, and community stakeholders.
The primary focus of the session was to share an updated inventory of available properties on Wilmington’s East Side and encourage realtors to list these properties. Mayor Purzycki also urged loan officers to underwrite mortgages for potential eligible homeowners.
Mayor Purzycki expressed enthusiasm about the developments on the East Side. “There are wonderful things happening across the East Side of Wilmington today, and we are excited to share that story,” he said. The mayor emphasized the goal of increasing opportunities for people to achieve their dream of being a homeowner, improving the quality of life for everyone in the community.
The Networking and Information Session is part of the ongoing East Side Rehabilitation and Stabilization Initiative, the most ambitious housing and neighborhood plan in the city’s history, first announced by Mayor Purzycki in January 2022.
Participants at the event included representatives from M&T Bank, Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA), local realtor Sharon Stewart, Jamaican-born folk artist Eunice LaFate, and Mary Ann Cronin, CRA Mortgage Loan Officer at WSFS Bank.
Director Weir highlighted the importance of communication in this initiative, stating, “This event was part of a series that involves the community and stakeholders. The City is committed to including the people that are currently living and working in our neighborhoods and those who wish to move here as we move forward.”
Following the session, participants were invited to take a guided bus tour of housing projects on the East Side, viewing properties under renovation and meeting with developer Freddie Mitchell, a former wide receiver with the Philadelphia Eagles. The tour also included a visit to the new $84 million Bancroft School, set to open in 2024, and a walk through shops and restaurants along Market Street in downtown Wilmington.
