Wilmington Honored for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 33rd Consecutive Year

Government Finance Officers Association

WILMINGTON, DE — The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the City of Wilmington with its prestigious Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for the City’s Fiscal Year 2022 Financial Statements. This marks the 33rd consecutive year that the city has received this highest form of recognition in government financial reporting.

The award is presented to the department or individual instrumental in a government’s attainment of a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This certificate is given to governments whose annual financial reports adhere to program standards. Over 4,300 governments receive such certificates each year from the GFOA.

The award pertains to the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021. To be eligible for the award, the City’s report had to meet certain requirements. Reports submitted to the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (COA) are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee (SRC), comprised of individuals with expertise in public sector financial reporting.

Finance Director J. Brett Taylor said, “The Department of Finance develops its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report to inform citizens, employees, and bond investors on the City’s financial condition and internal controls to ensure transparency and accounting integrity. We’re quite pleased that our financial statements consistently meet the high standards required to attain a GFOA Certificate.”

Mayor Mike Purzycki lauded the achievement, stating, “I congratulate Brett Taylor and his staff on this significant achievement as it reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental financial reporting. Our Finance Department goes above and beyond each year, which is consistent with my administration’s push for increased transparency and efficiency in City government.”
