PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a full weekend closure of westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry neighborhood for critical bridge deck repairs.
The closure will commence at 9:00 PM on Friday, March 28, and remain in effect until 5:00 AM on Monday, March 31. Affected sections include westbound I-76 between the 34th Street off-ramp and the University Avenue on-ramp. Several related ramps will also close during this period, including the ramps from 34th Street and South Street to westbound I-76, and the westbound I-76 ramp to South Street. However, the University Avenue on-ramp to westbound I-76 will remain open.
During the closure, regional traffic will be directed to use I-95 and I-676 West (Vine Street Expressway) as detour routes. Local drivers will be diverted through a surface-street detour utilizing Grays Ferry Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Schuylkill Avenue. Travelers are urged to anticipate significant backups on both the interstate and surrounding roadways.
This project involves repairs to two bridge structures over Grays Ferry Avenue, Wharton Street, Reed Street, the Schuylkill River, and CSX rail tracks. The work will include the removal and replacement of deteriorated concrete deck sections, application of a protective coating to seal the bridge deck, and resurfacing to enhance durability and weather resistance.
Additional weekend closures are expected for this project later in the spring. The schedule is weather-dependent and has been coordinated with the City of Philadelphia, SEPTA, and other regional stakeholders to minimize disruption.
Electronic signage along I-76 and major city arterials will provide updates and detour guidance throughout the closure period. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area if possible.
