PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Army West Point Athletics Association (AWPAA) and the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) have secured the initial private funding needed to kickstart a significant upgrade to their historic Michie Stadium. Construction is slated to begin in Spring 2024, with completion expected by Summer 2026.
This ambitious project, led by nationally recognized firm EwingCole, aims to reconstruct and modernize the existing East Stands. The enhancements promise a dynamic, modern, eco-friendly complex that will marry the stadium’s majestic site with state-of-the-art design strategies.
“The AWPAA and the WPAOG are thrilled to move this project forward,” said Project Manager Kevin Murphy. “It’s exciting for the athletics program, the cadets, and the design team to finally see a path forward for this long-anticipated project.”
The revamped East Stands will encompass premium seating options and upgraded concessions, significantly improving fan experience. In a nod to tradition and collegiate spirit, the Corps of Cadets seating section will span from one end zone to the other, placing the cadets at the heart of game-day support.
In addition to these improvements, the project includes plans to reconfigure the surrounding landscape to enhance accessibility and highlight the breathtaking views of Lusk Reservoir, the Cadet Chapel, Fort Putnam, and the picturesque Hudson Valley.
While construction takes place, Michie Stadium will continue to host fans for various events, including men’s and women’s lacrosse, football, graduation ceremonies, and special occasions. This commitment ensures the stadium remains a vibrant hub for the Army West Point community throughout the renovation process.
The Michie Stadium Preservation Project highlights the importance of private funding in supporting infrastructure developments within educational institutions. It also points to the evolving expectations of fans and athletes, driving the need for modern, eco-friendly facilities that enhance the spectator experience while respecting historical and cultural significance.
