Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge and Rotunda Staircase Set for Demolition

traffic alert expect delays

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced plans to begin demolition on the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge and the bridge’s Rotunda staircase at Penn’s Landing in Center City Philadelphia. The demolition is set to commence next week.

From Monday, November 29, to Friday, December 1, northbound Columbus Boulevard will be reduced from three lanes to one between Lombard Circle and Market Street. This reduction will take place from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM to facilitate the demolition of the overhead pedestrian walkway and staircase.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time when passing through the work area due to expected backups and delays. The demolition schedule is subject to weather conditions.

This work forms part of PennDOT’s ambitious $329 million I-95/CAP project. The project aims to replace, expand, and improve the existing covered section of I-95 and enhance multi-modal connections between Center City and the Delaware River waterfront. It represents a significant effort to modernize and improve infrastructure in the heart of Philadelphia.
