VILLANOVA, PA — Villanova University has commenced its 49th annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (HHAW). The event, which began on Saturday, November 11, will run through Monday, November 20.
Sponsored by the Center for Peace and Justice Education, HHAW focuses on education, advocacy, and service, aiming to end hunger and homelessness worldwide. The initiative was first introduced at Villanova in 1975 under the guidance of the late Rev. Ray Jackson, OSA, with a focus on discussing the root causes of poverty.
Since its inception, HHAW has expanded beyond the university’s walls, reaching over 700 campuses and communities across the nation, making it the most widely organized hunger and homelessness awareness event of its kind in the United States.
This year’s schedule includes a variety of activities aimed at raising awareness and funds for the cause. Highlights include:
- The Back on My Feet 5K, held on Saturday, November 11, at the Riley Ellipse.
- The Everybody Eats Philly keynote address, scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, in Driscoll Auditorium.
- The “Packing with a purpose” event for the Wayne Food Pantry on Thursday, November 16, in Dougherty Hall.
- A “paint your own tote bag” fundraiser on Friday, November 16, also in Dougherty Hall.
- A Thanksgiving outreach drive on Monday, November 20, at the Connelly Center Circle.
