Veterinary Practice Partners Welcomes Dr. Michelle Rudd as Equity Partner, Reinforcing Its Commitment to Empowering Veterinarians

Veterinary Practice Partners

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA — Veterinary Practice Partners (VPP), a leading co-ownership partner for veterinarians across the nation, has announced its partnership with Dr. Michelle Rudd. Previously an associate veterinarian and Medical Director at the Annapolis Cat Hospital and Bay Ridge Animal Hospital, Dr. Rudd transitions to the role of equity partner, joining more than 90 other former associate veterinarians who have become co-owners in partnership with VPP.

The partnership with Dr. Rudd underscores VPP’s unique model of allowing veterinary professionals to maintain control over medical services while it manages the operational aspects of the business. This approach is attracting more veterinarians to consider co-ownership, leading to a rise in practice ownership in an industry that is predominantly female.

Dr. Rudd’s decision to become a co-owner and equity partner was largely influenced by VPP’s culture and operational success. “VPP’s differentiated approach to partnership allows veterinarians like me to have a vested interest in the two practices,” she said. “VPP cares about the people they employ, and they want to help veterinarians like me create a place where our staff is valued and our patients are provided with the best care possible.”

The Annapolis Cat Hospital and Bay Ridge Animal Hospital, located in Annapolis, Maryland, are full-service veterinary practices that initially partnered with VPP in 2017. These hospitals provide a wide range of services, including wellness care, diagnostics, dentistry, surgery, and an in-house pharmacy.

VPP’s model offers significant benefits to its partners. Through economies of scale, improved purchasing power, and access to a larger pool of resources, VPP provides enhanced benefits to staff members that aren’t always available in private practices.

The co-ownership model is moving the needle toward more equitable practice ownership in the veterinary industry. Since its inception in 2011, 92 associate veterinarians have become equity partners of their respective veterinary clinics and hospitals, with 76% of these new doctor-partners being female.

VPP’s responsibility division allows veterinarians to focus on medical services and practice culture while it handles core business functions, including marketing, finance and accounting, operations, IT, and HR and recruiting. “At VPP, our pathway to practice ownership sets us apart,” said John McDonough, CEO of VPP. “Our focus is on driving success for the VPP community while nurturing the career paths of the talented employees at our partnered hospitals and clinics.”

The partnership with Dr. Rudd showcases VPP’s efforts to pave the way for women and other underrepresented groups to join the ranks of practice owners, thereby promoting diversity and inclusivity in the veterinary industry.
